America's Promise Alliance “Featured Communities Action Forum”

On September 9, Karen Pittman, Merita Irby, Nicole Yohalem, Nalini Ravindranath and Blake Dohrn attended the America's Promise Alliance Featured Communities Action Forum.

The convening included more than 250 leaders representing Alliance partners from 12 featured communities (Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Jackson, Louisville, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Oakland and Washington D.C.). The Forum team met with partners from these featured communities to aid them in working on their local Dropout Summit follow-up plans and Quality Counts initiatives.

The America's Promise Alliance will support 50 state and, at least, 50 city Dropout Prevention Summits to be held by 2010. The Dropout Prevention Summits aim to:

  • Increase public awareness of the dropout and college-readiness crisis,
  • Secure the collaboration of corporate, nonprofit, public and education sectors,
  • Engage schools and provide exposure to their efforts to help youth,
  • Identify and inspire local leaders to get involved and
  • Mobilize leaders around the Alliance's National Action strategies.
