Forum Works with State Teams Across the Country to Improve Youth Policy

The Forum, along with the National Conference of State Legislatures and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, recently completed the Fourth Annual Youth Policy Institute.  The Institutes bring together state policymakers and are designed to help state governments obtain better outcomes from their youth policies and programs. This year's Institute included state teams from Missouri, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee.  The Institute provided a wonderful opportunity for state teams of legislators, executive branch officials, and judges to develop strategies for enhancing youth policy in their states. Karen Pittman delivered opening remarks to the state teams that invigorated the planning sessions.

The state teams:

·  Gained a greater understanding of the principles of positive youth development and how their application can contribute to better youth outcomes, especially when used to inform policy makers in the strategic investment of public dollars.

·  Tackled real issues that young people are facing as they prepare for college, work and life and brainstormed comprehensive policy solutions.

·  Explored frameworks for developing a cross-system approach to youth policy and governance mechanisms for these efforts, such as Children’s Cabinets and joint legislative committees, and the creation of youth budgets and report cards.

·  Developed plans of action for youth initiatives in each state.
