A Note From Karen Pittman
August seems to be a month for travel, whether it is for work or pleasure. A new study has come out showing that adult males who take vacations are, other things being equal, healthier than those who don't. Here's to all of you who are finding time for real vacations. August at the Forum is turning out to be a combination of travel for work and pleasure. Last week was the Indianapolis Summit for Student Success, followed by a day of meetings with Indy Leaders including the core team of the new P-20 Partnership being facilitated by Strive. We learned a lot about what's going on in Indy (answer: lots). Our messages were also well received. As always, people loved the insulated pipeline analogy and agreed that student success requires big picture goals, strategies and partnerships. More importantly, they cheered at the idea that all of these hinge on better data!! The Lily Endowment and the Central Indiana Community Foundation were particularly responsive. They met with us at breakfast and then again at dinner (with Ananda Roberts joining) to discuss the value of building an integrated data platform that allows leaders to ask and answer tough questions about youth outcomes (academics and beyond), youth participation (school and beyond), youth programs (availability and quality), and youth resources (public and private). They praised the development of the Partnership whose members are truly prepared to a) work together and b) meet them where they are (including working with existing data and coalitions) and help them assess where they want to go.
They have asked us to work with John Brandon (MCCOY) to prepare a concept paper on how we would proceed. We're now on to Chattanooga to join an even broader group of Partners (AASA, CVWF, UWA) to learn about their goals and efforts and look for ways that we can be helpful. We'll have much to report at the September meeting. We have even more to do before the September meeting to be ready to meet with teams from our priority cities that will be in town for the GradNation meeting and start more intentional calls and visits to begin to document community leaders capacity-building needs. We really need your engagement and support, however, to pull this off. The pace won't slow down for quite a while if we're to meet our 2009 goals!
Partner Intelligence Gathering Process
Our work is moving forward quickly and it is exciting to see things coming together. You recently received an email that outlined the next steps in communicating with leaders in places. That email included some important background information and talking points for making calls to your contacts in cities that we have prioritized. In order for us to have a productive discussion at the September 15 Steering Committee Meeting, we need to have the responses from your calls submitted to Jonathan by September 3. That information will be organized and used for establishing the most logical teams of partners to work with different communities. Thanks for your hard work!
Please Send Us Your News and Updates!
