Southeastern Network of Youth and Family Services

The Southeastern Network of Youth and Family Services, with the OASIS Center, held their 2007 annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee.  This year, Karen Pittman gave a keynote highlighting how the Forum's Ready by 21 framework can help allied youth fields ensure that all youth, especially those from disconnected families, have the opportunities, supports, and services they need to succeed.

Sarkeys Foundation's Southwest Regional Leadership Forum

Merita Irby presented at the Sarkeys Foundation's Southwest Regional Leadership Forum where nonprofit leaders convened to discuss issues around nonprofit management and specific content focus areas. Merita facilitated a breakout session entitled "Helping Young People Become Ready by 21."

Georgetown Divide/Black Oak Mine Receives CCP Award

The Georgetown Ready by 21 Coalition is the recent recipient of of the 2007 Award for Building Community from the Center for Collaborative Planning (CCP) in Sacramento. This award is given annually to community coalition or collaborative who is building community infrastructure that supports youth and community and is bringing human resources to their community.

Karen Pittman Given Spirit of Service Award at Conference Held in Baltimore

On November 16, The Healthy Teen network held their 28th annual conference where Karen received a Spirit of Service Award in honor of her "dedication and leadership in the field of adolescent pregnancy, parenting and prevention."

Youth Today: Creativity, Sprituality and Youth Work: Claiming the Territory

Embedded in the pages of the October Youth Today were two pieces that are worth revisiting so that they can be connected. Consider this a low-budget instant replay with comments.

The first piece was Peter Benson’s column, “Youth Development and the Creative Life,” in which he laments the continued decline of investment in the arts and offers data that suggest that the most common source of “spark” for U.S. teens—“the interest or talent from which we derive energy”—is the creative arts. According to Benson’s research, “music, art, dance and writing are mentioned twice as often as sports” by both boys and girls.
