Where and When Does Learning Happen: A Thought Leader Conversation with Karen Pittman

November 30, 2018/1:00-2:00 pm ET

How can schools and youth development organizations better align to support the entire education ecosystem?

Who are all the people in the local community who contribute to learning and improving outcomes for young people? How are these people trying to connect to their local schools? What are their interests and voices?

For two years, the Forum’s CEO and co-founder Karen Pittman has served as a commissioner with the Aspen Institute’s National Commission on Social, Emotional and Academic Development. Since June, Karen has led a group of youth development leaders wrestling with the questions above as head of the Commission's Youth Development Work Group. Forty diverse organizations chose to convene and make recommendations to encourage collaboration and partnerships among all organizations working for children and youth, in school and out. The work group’s efforts are summarized in the recently released brief, authored by Priscilla Little and Karen, titled “Building Partnerships: In Support of Where, When, and How Learning Happens.”

On this special thought leader conversation, Karen Pittman, who usually gets to ask the questions in this series of conversations, and Priscilla Little offered their reflections and thoughts on the work of the Commission and the Youth Development Work Group, and how the ideas and concepts summarized in the brief can be used to strengthen alignment and collaboration.
